You have reservations at the poshest place in town. You've been spending all your free
time reading up at DatingFun.com and now it's time to use your knowledge. Don't panic! You'll look like a pro
if you follow our three easy steps to ordering wine.
Be prepared
Be prepared before your waiter comes to the table. Have an idea of how much you want to spend on
the bottle so you can narrow down your choices. Next, decide whether you want a red or white wine. The
old rule of thumb was red meats get red wine and white meats and fish get white wine, but this can be
disregarded if you have a favorite bottle. (If you're old school or really want to impress your date,
check out our list of wine and food pairings.)
Ask for suggestions.
If you don't know which bottle to choose, ask your server what he would
recommend. Most waitstaff have a good
appreciation of the wines and will be able to suggest an appropriate bottle. Stick to familiar brands
and varieties to ensure a good bottle. Most restaurants also offer wines by the glass; a good choice
to if you don't think you can finish a bottle, or if you're unsure about the taste. (a bottle contains approximately 4-5 glasses)
Don't be fazed by rituals.
Servers have specific protocol for presenting wines-don't let it
intimidate you. After you make your choice, your server will bring the bottle to the table and show
you the label to satisfy you it's the wine you ordered. Then, he/she will uncork the bottle, present
the cork to you and pour you a small taste, waiting for your approval before pouring for everyone else
at the table. If the wine's okay, nod and the waiter will pour for everyone else. If you think something's
wrong with the wine, tell your server right away, and ask for another bottle. They shouldn't argue with
you, unless you have no idea what you are talking about. (But we're here to help you so that doesn't
happen)
